  ATG Services - Migration

  Planning

Managing a software migration is a complex process. In most situations migration is not a choice—it is a necessity. In the case of ATG implementations it is a productive means of increasing your return on investment and reducing total cost of ownership.

There is an increased pressure to migrate as newer versions of software with new features become available. Management is likely to resist software migrations due to budget constraints or other budget concerns.

According to the Gartner Group, balancing the factors that affect migration decisions can be roughly divided into two categories:

  • Push factors that relate to cost and compatibility issues.
  • Pull factors that relate to availability of new functionality, better performance and enhanced promise targeted at the user community.

Identifying and measuring the impact of the push and pull factors specific to environment is a prerequisite for planning an appropriate timeframe for migration.

Introspection and asset management tools can eliminate a great level of difficulty that one might otherwise encounter when planning a software migration for assessing the Push and Pull factors.
